Do You Have Primary or Secondary TMAU?

7 questions. 3 minutes. A real answer — the kind your doctor probably never gave you.

Question 1 of 7

When did you first notice the body odor or smell issue?

Think about when it started — not when it got worse.

Since childhood or early adolescence

Has been present as long as I can remember

Started in adulthood — I didn't always have this

Developed later in life, maybe after a health change

Started after a specific event

Illness, pregnancy, major stress, antibiotic use, diet change

I'm not sure — it feels like it's always been there but got worse

Question 2 of 7

Does anyone in your biological family have a similar odor issue?

Blood relatives — parents, siblings, cousins, grandparents.

Yes — a parent, sibling, or close relative has the same issue

No — no one in my family has this that I know of

Maybe — there's something similar but no one talks about it

I don't know my family history

Question 3 of 7

What makes the odor noticeably worse?

Select the option that best describes your primary trigger.

High-choline foods — eggs, fish, liver, legumes

Even small amounts seem to cause a noticeable reaction

Stress, anxiety, or being in hot environments

Emotional or physical stress is the biggest factor

Hormonal changes — period, ovulation, pregnancy, menopause

Multiple things — food AND stress AND hormones all seem to trigger it

Question 4 of 7

Have you ever had a TMA urine test or genetic test for the FMO3 enzyme?

This is the official diagnostic test for TMAU.

Yes — I tested positive for elevated TMA or FMO3 mutation

Yes — my test came back negative or borderline

I still have symptoms even though the test was negative

No — I've never been tested

No one ever offered or suggested this test

I tried to get tested but was dismissed or couldn't access it

Question 5 of 7

Do you have a history of gut issues, liver problems, or significant antibiotic use?

Secondary TMAU is often linked to gut-liver disruption.

Yes — I've had gut dysbiosis, IBS, Crohn's, or frequent antibiotic use

Yes — I have or had liver issues, fatty liver, or elevated enzymes

No — my gut and liver health have generally been fine

I'm not sure — I've never had these specifically checked

Question 6 of 7

When you strictly avoid high-choline foods, does the odor improve significantly?

High-choline foods: eggs, red meat, fish, liver, soybeans, lecithin.

Yes — my symptoms improve dramatically when I avoid these foods

Somewhat — diet helps but doesn't solve it completely

Not really — diet doesn't seem to make much difference

I haven't tried an elimination diet consistently

Question 7 of 7

Have you tried Riboflavin (B2) supplementation? If so, what happened?

B2 is a direct cofactor for the FMO3 enzyme.

Yes — B2 helped noticeably when I took it consistently

Yes — B2 helped a little but not enough on its own

Yes — I tried B2 and it didn't seem to help at all

Generic B2 often doesn't absorb well — form matters

No — I've never tried B2 supplementation
